About
Simple invoicing for New Zealand contractors, with the tax math built in.
Never get caught short at tax time again. When a client pays you, part of that money was never really yours: it's the GST and income tax you'll owe IRD later. Coffer keeps track of every payment as you mark it paid and ringfences that tax automatically, so the number you see is what's genuinely yours to spend.
You invoice through Coffer, set aside savings or holiday money in named pots if you want to, and keep a tidy set of records ready for your accountant. Your money never leaves your own bank account, and we never take a cut of what you earn.
We're building Coffer because getting on top of your tax shouldn't take a spreadsheet and a spare weekend. The aim is simple: do the maths in the background, keep you informed as your tax adds up and deadlines approach, and always show you one number you can trust, so tax time never catches you off guard.
For years I generated invoices by hand in Google Docs, saved each PDF to a folder on my laptop, and collated them every quarter to email to my accountant when GST or provisional tax fell due. It worked, but I wanted a more organised way to do it.
On top of that I kept a spreadsheet to track how much GST I'd collected and how much income tax was accruing. The harder problem was knowing what was actually mine to spend: my operating cash, money owed to IRD, and personal savings all sat in one revolving-credit account, and the bank balance didn't tell me which was which.
Coffer is the answer. It generates the invoices, ringfences GST and income tax as you mark them paid, lets you set aside savings and holiday money in named pots, and shows the headline number you can actually trust. The PDFs land in one place ready for the accountant; the dashboard does the math I was doing on spreadsheets.
I'm a software engineer based in Auckland, and at heart I'm a builder. I've spent more than a decade in this industry, much of it in DevOps and site reliability engineering, building and running the kind of systems other people quietly depend on. I like making things that work properly and then get out of the way, which is the whole instinct behind Coffer.
That decade has given me a clear sense of how software like this should be built, especially when it touches something as personal as your money. Security and privacy aren't things I bolt on at the end; they're where I start. I hold Coffer to the same standard I'd want from any tool I trusted with my own numbers.
Built for freelancers, sole traders, and independent contractors in New Zealand.
In practice that comes down to a few concrete things. Coffer never holds or moves your money; it stays in your own bank account, and Coffer only ever sees the balances you choose to enter. It never takes a cut of what you invoice or earn. Your data is private to your account, kept behind secure sign-in, and never sold or shared. And it stays yours: you can export it at any time, or ask to have your account and everything in it permanently deleted.
If you have thoughts, or run into something, I'd genuinely like to hear from you.
