Open banking

Reading your operating balance and watching invoice payments land, without Coffer ever holding or moving your money.

What it will do

Today you keep your balance current by entering it yourself, a quick snapshot on the Bank page. Bank connectivity through open banking is something Coffer is working towards. Once it is connected, Coffer reads your operating balance and sees invoice payments arrive, so your ringfence updates on its own. Coffer never touches your money; your bank still holds everything.

How Coffer could connect: two routes through Akahu

Coffer could read your bank data through Akahu, New Zealand's open-finance provider, in one of two ways. Both work. They differ in who sets up and looks after the connection, and Coffer is weighing them up, leaning towards the first.

Accreditation, with Coffer managing the connection

Full Akahu accreditation. Coffer connects as an accredited recipient, you grant read-only access, and you can review or revoke it whenever you want. Setting up and maintaining that connection is Coffer's responsibility, so there is nothing for you to configure and Coffer never handles your bank login.

Personal tokens, with you managing the connection

Akahu's free personal tier, where you set up your own Akahu account, connect your banks, generate read-only tokens, and hand those tokens to Coffer. Akahu offers this free for personal use, and it works, but it is not intended for a commercial product like Coffer to build on, and it puts the setup and upkeep on you.

Where Coffer is leaning, and why

For now Coffer is leaning towards accreditation. It takes time and review, which is why this sits on the roadmap rather than in the app today, but Coffer thinks it is the right call: the connection is set up and maintained by Coffer rather than by you, access stays read-only and something you can pull back whenever you like, and it is on the footing Akahu intends for a product like Coffer. It matches the promise the rest of Coffer makes, that your money stays yours and Coffer stays out of the way.

What is true today

Until open banking is live, you keep your balance current with a quick manual snapshot on the Bank page, and every ringfence figure is built from that. Open banking will not change what Coffer can do for you; it will make keeping your balance current effortless.

Your money stays yours.

Coffer keeps the numbers behind your contracting straight through the year: what you have invoiced, what you have spent, and what you owe. It works out the figures and keeps the records, but it is not tax advice and does not stand in for your accountant or IRD. Its job is to make sure the numbers you take to them are right.
